I think what happens is everybody tries to go for breadth and depth, and then realizes depth is actually harder to achieve: that consistency, that not selling out, that staying true to who we are, and then bringing content with the limits to who we can reach within that. Once we start to shift in wanting more from staying true to who we are, that's when we lose the engagement. There is a point where too much is overwhelming, and it takes away. I'm always someone who preferred smaller rooms than bigger rooms, anyway.
OMG that Firefox video is too funny. On another note I've been created "longer form" vids over the past few weeks and it's like pulling teeth to get people to watch longer than 20 seconds. I've tried different types of formats and the results pale in comparison to a carousel post on instagram. Also the audience is rented on Instagram no matter how long your posts or videos are. Substack, email subscribers, and your own website are the only audiences you own.
The YouTube view change in the piece is bigger than it looks. From 31 March 2025 a Shorts view counts when playback starts, and the old threshold metric became engaged views, which is still what monetisation runs on. Any Shorts trend crossing that date is two metrics on one line. The 15% against 0.3% engagement gap has the same shape, mostly a denominator effect, since reach on large accounts runs well past followers. Engaged views per thousand reached keeps both comparable.
